That’s how much it will cost to build the University of Tennessee’s new 228,000 square foot engineering hall. Construction of the new building begins this fall and is expected to be completed by 2021. The hall will house research labs, project spaces, informal areas for student collaboration and the nuclear engineering program.

That’s how many new universities will be added to the SEMINAL: Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning project. The new universities include two CSU campuses— East Bay and Fullerton— along with Ohio State and several others. The project, which is a National Science Foundation-funded initiative, employs the use of “active learning” techniques in introductory math courses.

That’s how much the number of international graduate students dropped from the fall of 2016 to the fall of 2017. The drops were almost completely concentrated in the science and engineering fields. The biggest drop came from Indian students, whose numbers fell by 19 percent in 2017, followed by Saudi Arabia, Iran and South Korea.

That’s how much state spending on higher education increased over the last year, according to a survey compiled by SHEEO and the Center for the Study of Education Policy at Illinois State University. However, this year’s increase is the smallest in five years, giving public institutions reason to still be concerned about their states’ economies.
